Buffi Duberman is ‘Personal English coach to the fresh and the fabulous’ zoals Racoon en Caro Emerald, ze schreef de boeken ’30 Ways to Save Your Ass in English’ en ‘Rock Your English!’, is docent op diverse hogescholen en universiteiten en liefhebber van het leven.

I read it every year. I think it’s so inspiring to read how people push themselves to the limit. When I think I can’t do it, I think of Xie Guizhong, for example, who can do 41 push ups in 30 seconds. On one finger. Gives me hope to never give up.

2. Malcolm Gladwell – The Tipping Point & and Outliers
Both by the brilliant Malcolm Gladwell. I devour everything that man writes – that’s why I couldn’t decide which one to pick, so I had to choose both. These books were very influential for me –teaching me to trust my instinct (even more!) when it comes to making decisions, and the different factors involved in different forms of success. I love his insight, his humor, and his hair.

She’s big, she’s awkard, she’s clumsy, she’s brilliant, and she’s my kind of beautiful. Miranda writes about defying conventions like no one else. (Oh, and while we’re at it, can I add Tina Fey’s brilliant Bossypants? I love smart funny women who dare to celebrate their uniqueness.)

4. Chris Baker & Jacob Hansen – The Elements of F*cking Style
Can you write an intelligent, informative, educational analysis of complicated English grammar and use the words ‘fuck’, ‘dildo’ and ‘asshole’ in doing so? Yes, you can. And they did. The original Elements of Style was written in 1918. These boys shook up the joint and put grammar in a funky jacket that most people would love to wear. They are my heroes and when I was writing 30 Ways to Save Your Ass in English I had it on my desk next to Rock Your English! to inspire me. They are the Matt Stone and Trey Parker of English grammar, at least to me.

5. Chris Karr – Crazy Sexy Diet
I read cookbooks like porn. I have over 150 cookbooks at home, and about 90% of them are veggie or vegan. My work requires tons of energy and I know that if I don’t eat right I can’t do what I love doing at the level I want to do it at. These recipes are all vegan, and I kick it up a notch by going gluten free too. (Oh, and sugar and caffeine free too.) On those rare occasions when I feel like having a double gin and tonic and a friet speciaal, I try to look in this book to inspire me to make something healthier. Then I close the book and jog to the cafeteria. All good.
